Baseball Battles Back to Defeat Stockton, 13-11

Box Score

Auburdale, Fla. - March 12, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball team battled back from an eight-run deficit to defeat Stockton, 13-11, on Monday night at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. Monday's game marked the third of nine games that the Pride will play in Florida as part of the RussMatt Invitational.

Win the win, the Pride improve to 3-2-1 on the year, while Stockton is now 1-3 overall. Springfield College used four pitchers in the win, highlighted by an impressive performance from freshman Duncan Satterlee (Albany, N.Y.) in relief, while Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) earned his second win of the season.

Leading the Pride offensively was Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.), who went 4-for-4 on the day, while freshmen Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) and David Wells (Shelton, Conn.) each picked up a pair of RBI. Additionally, Kyle Allen (Westerly, R.I.) had two hits and two RBI in five at bats.

Stockton opened up the game with five runs in the top of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead over the Pride, before extending its lead to seven in the top of the second. After the Ospreys added their eighth run of the game in the top of the third, Springfield College's bats woke up as the Pride constructed a four-run bottom of the third to pull within four of the Stockton.

Sophomore Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) walked to lead off the inning before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. After moving to third on a ground out from Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.), Shade scored on a passed ball to spark some momentum from the Pride. From there, Allen singled through the left side, scoring Joao, before Wells poked a two-run single up the middle to make it 8-4.

After giving up another run in the top half of the fourth to make it 9-4, Springfield College then produced five runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Bleakley, and RBI singles from Allen and Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) to even the game at nine.

From there, Satterlee iced the Stockton bats, as in his first collegiate appearance, as the freshman pitched 4.0 innings, allowing just three hits while also striking out three before getting relieved by Comment.

Joao got the Pride going in the bottom of the eighth inning with a triple down the right field line, before Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) doubled to left, scoring the senior to give the Pride a 10-9 lead. Gleason would score on a defensive miscue from the Ospreys to make it 11-9, before the Pride used heads-up base running to score on a pair of passed balls.

Stockton would answer with two runs in the top of the ninth, but Comment was able to shut the door to pick up his second win of the season.

The Pride will resume play on Tuesday, March 13 as the Pride will take on Gordon at 10 a.m.
