Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Farmingdale State in Florida

Auburndale, Fla. - March 16, 2018 - Playing an early doubleheader on Friday morning, the Springfield College baseball team split with Farmingdale State behind some impressive pitching performances from Brian Johnson (East Haddam, Conn.) and Shawn Babineau (Ashland, Mass.) to improve to 7-3-1 overall and 6-2 on their Spring Break. Playing their first two games down in Florida, Farmingdale State is now 3-1 on the year.

The Pride were limited to just four runs and was shut out in the first game, but responded with nine hits and eight runs in the second, including three hits from Jason Bean (Middleboro, Mass.) and a three-run home run from sophomore centerfielder Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Springfield College will conclude its Spring Break trip on Saturday, March 17 as it will play a 5 p.m. contest with New Paltz.

Farmingdale State 2, Springfield College 0 (Final - 7 innings)

Johnson pitched a complete game and only allowed four hits and two runs, while also striking out seven, but took the loss as the Prid was unable to score any runs in a 2-0 loss to Farmingdale State in the first leg of a doubleheader on Friday morning.

The Pride was unable to register a hit until the top of the fifth inning when Logan Barrett (Petersham, Mass.) broke up Farmindale State's no hitter with a single, before Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) also punched one through to give the Pride some life.

Junior Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) doubled in the top of the sixth and Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) singled in the top of the seveth, but the Pride was unable to score, resulting in a 2-0 finish.

Springfield College 8, Farmingdale State 0

Babineau was more than impressive in his third start of the season as the sophomore lefty went for 7.0 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out a career-best 10 batters en route to an 8-0 win for Springfield College over Farmingdale State, forcing a doubleheader split with the Rams on Saturday.

Offensively, Bean was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Shade hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second to lead the Pride to victory.

Senior infielder Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) started things off with an RBI in the bottom of the first inning, before Bean followed suit with an RBI single, plating Cooney to give Springfield College a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The maroon and white broke things open in the second, as it was able to score six more runs, highlgihted by Shade's home run to left.

Babineau retired the first 11 batters of the game for the Rams, as he also struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced.

The rally got started with Conor Santoianni (Stormville, N.Y.) and David Wells (Shelton, Conn.) getting on base, before Shade drove one out over the left field fence to make it 5-0, Pride. From there, Bean drove in Joao with an RBI single before Alex Denoyelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) reached on an error, allowing Gleason to come home to push the Pride's lead to seven. Wrapping up the scoring for Springfield College, Santoianni picked up a single, driving in Bean, and making it 8-0.

From there, Babineau locked in an did not surrender a hit to seal the finish off the complete-game shutout.
