Box Score

Cambridge, Mass. - April 28, 2018 - Playing its last regular-season contest of 2018, the Springfield College baseball team fell to MIT, 10-9, in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field. The game, which will go in the books as a non-conference game, followed the resumption of a halted game from March 31, in which the Engineers sealed on Saturday, 6-4.

Springfield College closes the regular season with an overall record of 23-13-2, as the Pride's 23 wins marks the most since the 2001 season. MIT is now 17-12 with the two wins. The two sides will meet again on Thursday, May 3 in the opening round of the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, as the Pride, which is the No. 5 seed, will travel back to fourth-seeded MIT.

The Pride used seven pitchers on Saturday afternoon, as Cole Donovan (Holderness, N.H.) took the loss to even his record out at 2-2. The sophomore pitched 0.2 frames and gave up the final run, while Dakota Aldrich (Ellington, Conn.) got the nod and pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit but two earned runs to the Engineers. Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) came on in relief and pitched an effective 2.1 innings, holding MIT to just one hit.

Offensively, the Pride was led by Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.), who went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomores Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Jake Gleason (South Dennis, Mass.) also registered a pair of RBI, while Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) also drove in a pair on the day.

Springfield College picked up two runs in the top of the first inning, as Bleakley singled to center to score Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Cooney, before adding a third run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Cooney to make it 3-0, Pride. MIT erased its deficit in the bottom of the second to pull even at three apiece, before tacking on two in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead over the Pride.

Springfield College answered in the top of the fifth when Gleason tripled to right center, scoring Joao and Cooney, before a double off the bat of Jason Bean (Middleboro, Mass.) scored Bleakley to even things at six apiece.

From there, MIT would add a pair in the bottom of the frame, before scoring twice more in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-6, but in the top of the ninth, the maroon and white rallied for three runs to pull back even. Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) scored on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Peter Marsicano (Allentown, N.J.), before Shade ripped a two-run single up the middle to make it 9-9.

After a pair of strikeouts in the top of the 10th, MIT sealed the win with a walk-off single to right center.
