Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 1, 2019 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team was defeated by Coast Guard in five sets in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Tuesday night in Blake Arena. The visiting Bears took the match by the scores of 12-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 15-11 to improve to 12-4, 4-1 in conference play, while the Pride slipped to 12-5, 1-3.
Coast Guard had 25 more kills than Springfield in the match as Amanda Dake put away 26 kills and Bridget Boyle added 11 kills to pace the Bears offense. Noelle Tursky produced a triple double with 26 assists, 15 digs, and 10 kills, Veronica Hine posted a team-best 21 sigs, and Makenna Martin totaled 30 assists. Coast Guard finished the match hitting .206 as a team.
Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) was credited with a match-best 28 digs and Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) turned in 18 digs and nine kills for the Pride. Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) recorded a team-best 12 kills at a .367 clip and Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) registered 29 assists, nine digs, and three aces in the setback.
It was a promising start to the match for Springfield as they cruised to a 25-12 opening set win. Springfield jumped out to a 13-3 lead and would force the Bears into their second time of the frame after Tanner manufactured a kill off the block. The Bears would later commit their eighth attack error of the set to give the Pride the win as the visitors were limited to a -.024 hitting percentage thanks to a stout Springfield defense that was paced by nine digs from Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.).
Coast Guard used a fast start in the second set to seize a 7-1 advantage, a lead that would balloon to 16-7 as the Pride whistled for a timeout. The visitors would cruise to a 25-17 win as it erupted for 17 kills, including five from Dake.
In the third, Springfield scored eight-straight points to take an 8-4 cushion following a Coast Guard attack error. The Pride would push its lead to 19-13, but out of a timeout, the Bears pulled within two points on four occasions, the last coming at 24-22. However, Katie vonKampen (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Stella Madden (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) combined for a block on the pin to seal the 25-22 win.
Trailing 6-4 in the fourth, Springfield allowed Coast Guard to surge ahead and own a 15-9 lead as the hosts burned their second timeout of the set. The visitors didn't let up, forcing a fifth set thanks to a 10-5 burst as the 25-14 win concluded with Dake's seventh kill of the set.
In the fifth, Springfield rebounded from an 8-4 deficit thanks to three-straight Coast Guard attack errors which evened the set at nine-all. However, Coast Guard responded with the next two-points on a kill from Tursky and Springfield attack error to earn a two-point cushion that would ultimately result in a 15-11 victory following Dake's 26th kill of the night.
On Saturday, Springfield will travel to Wellesley for a rematch of last year's NEWMAC Championship Semifinal, which is slated for a 1 pm start.
