Box Score Weston, Mass. - January 28, 2020 - Thanks to a .519 team hitting percentage, the Springfield College men's volleyball team cruised to a straight-set win at Regis College on Tuesday night. The Pride won by the scores of 25-15, 25-7, 25-8.
Springfield remained the No. 2 ranked team in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll and improved to 4-1 on the year. The loss dropped Regis to 0-2 on the season.
Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) put together a strong showing on the court, registering 14 kills on a .667 hitting percentage to go along with five aces. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was credited with 21 assists and Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) had a match-best seven digs to lead a Springfield defensive effort that limited Regis to a .018 hitting percentage.
Springfield jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first following three aces from Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) as Regis burned an early timeout. The lead grew to 21-11 when Brandow converted a kill out of the back row, and the sophomore would later muscle a kill through the block in transition for the 25-15 win. Springfield had five of their 12 aces in the frame.
In the second set, Lilley elevated for a solo stuff to give the Pride an 8-3 cushion as the hosts whistled for a timeout. After Regis pulled within 15-7, Brandow sided out with a kill and then went to the service line as part of a set-ending 10-0 run, and Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) would later put away an overpass for the 25-7 win. Springfield would register 15 kills on a .565 hitting percentage in the set.
Three-consecutive kills from Brandow gave the Pride a 6-0 advantage in the third before a kill from Braden Tam (Hong Kong) allowed the cushion to balloon to 14-2. Springfield would registered 10 kills on 15 errorless attempts in the third set en route to the 25-8 win.
On Friday night, Springfield will return to Blake Arena to face its first nationally-ranked opponent on the season when it faces No. 8 Wells at 7 pm.
