Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 22, 2020 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team opened up the 2020 season with an 18-11 victory over Framingham State on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Springfield picks up their first victory of the season while Framingham drops to 0-1.
Leading the Pride's offensive attack was junior Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.), who finished with nine goals on the afteroon and eclipsed the 100-goal mark for her career in just 39 games. Teammate Gabby Fogg (Kennebunk, Maine) made major contributions with a hat trick and eight draw controls. Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass) added a pair of goals while Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) made her collegiate debut and dished out six assists. Springfield was a perfect 5-of-5 on free position goals.
Defensively, Katie Campbell (Somer, N.Y.) caused seven turnovers and finished with five draw controls as well as contributing a goal. In net, Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) came away with her first victory of the year with six saves.
For the Rams, Grace Gamache and Alissa Marino each poured in three goals while Gamache added a apir of assists. Morgan Begley and Hannah McMahon each had a pair of scores. In the net, Alexis Burleigh faced 23 shots and made five saves.
Springfield kicked off the contest with a goal, at the 29:19 mark, as Johnson delivered a pass to a cutting Sarnacki for the Pride's early 1-0 lead. From there, Framingham State rattled off three unanswered goals to go up 3-1 with 19:53 remaining in the half. At the 18:17 mark, Campbell forced a turnover and found Fogg, who sped to the net for the unassisted strike. Sarnacki was able to drill a free position shot past the keeper to knot the game up at 3-3 with 14:45 remaining in the half. From there, each team would trade goals to make the score 6-6, heading into the break.
In the second half, Springfield struck first as Johnson and Sarnacki connected again to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Pride. At 26:65, Gamache tied the contest for Framingham, then, at 26:22 Hanna McMahon drilled shot to give the Rams a 8-7 lead. The score was tied once again with 25:48 remaining as Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) sliced across the shooting circle and was the recepient of a feed from Allison Delmonte (Braintree, Mass.), which made the score 8-8. From there, the Pride ripped off four unanswered goals, three of which came from Sarnacki, to take a 12-8 lead with 21:33 to go in the game. Framingham would score back-to-back goals to make it 12-10, but the Pride were able to respond with a goal from Martel with 16:43 remaining another strike from Sarnacki to take a 14-10 lead at the 12:51 mark. Springfield finished the game outscoring the Rams 4-1 and took the 18-11 victory.
Springfield will host Endicott next Wednesday at 4 pm.
