Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 29, 2020 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team used a fast start and never looked back as it swept Wentworth on Saturday night in Blake Arena by the set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.
Springfield picked up its second victory of the weekend and improved to 15-2 as the nation's No. 2 ranked team in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll. Wentworth is now 11-4 this year.
Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) stuffed the stat sheet with 12 digs, eight kills, and three aces, while Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) drilled 12 kills, hitting .455, to go along with four blocks and two aces. Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) continued to impress offensively with 11 kills, and Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) helped the Pride to a .321 hitting percentage behind 31 assists. Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) had seven kills on 11 errorless attemps and Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) recorded nine digs to help the Pride own a 39-23 edge in the digs department while help limit Wentworth to a .131 hitting percentage for the match.
The Pride put on an offensive show in the first set, hitting at a .684 clip behind five kills each from York and Anderson. After a back-and-forth start, Springfield would gain an 8-6 edge when Brandow put away a kill off hands, but the Leopards would battle back to tie things up at 15-all. However, Brandow sided out and later ripped three-straight aces as part of a 6-0 Springfield scoring run which gave the hosts the 21-15 edge. The Pride would take the 25-18 kill off a fantastic effort by Anderson, as he blistered a kill out of system for the win.
In the second, Anderson thumped a kill down the line to force the visitors into a timeout at 14-10. Springfield's lead would grow to 20-13 following a Wentworth attack error and Brandow would later get set point when he converted out of the back row. York later tallied his fifth kill of the set to seal the 25-20 win.
Neither team could muster much offense in the third, and Springfield seized early control with the first four points, including a pair of transition kills by Parker. Springfield's lead would balloon to 10 on three occasions, the last coming at 20-10. The visitors would respond with an 8-3 surge to make it a three-point game, but Anderson would terminate three kills down the stretch to fuel the 25-18 win.
Springfield will play again on Tuesday night when it hosts nationally-ranked St. John Fisher at 6 pm.
