Box Score New York, N.Y. - March 6, 2020 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team picked up a three-set win on Friday night at Hunter by the scores were 25-20, 27-25, 25-23 in favor of the Pride.
Springfield, which was the top-ranked team in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, boosted its record to 17-2 on the year.
Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) continued to impress with 16 kills, hitting .323, while Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) added 14 kills and seven digs. Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) chipped in nine kills and Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) totaled 38 assists and seven digs in helping Springfield hit .302. Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) picked up a match-high nine digs, and Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) was credited with five blocks. On the night, Springifeld held a 43-27 edge in kills and a 34-23 cushion in digs.
Springfield again got off to a fantastic start offensively, producing 15 kills at a .565 clip in the opening frame. Holding an 18-17 lead, Brandow and York each put away kills before Brandow ripped an ace to force the hosts into a timeout. The hosts would get no closer than three points and York put away back-to-back kills for the 25-20 win.
Neither team hit above .100 in the second set, but the Pride was seemingly in control midway through the frame with a 16-12 edge. However, Hunter rattled off six of the next seven points to earn an 18-17 advantage. Springfield would fight off two set points, the last coming at 25-24, before kills from Brandow and Anderson gave the Pride a set point of its own. Hunter would then commit their eight attack error for the set as Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the match.
A big swing from York gave Springfield an 11-6 lead in the third, but the Hawks would use a late 8-3 surge to force the Pride into a timeout after its lead was trimmed to 21-20. Out of the break, Anderson came up with a pair of key kills before Brandow put down two of his own to compete the 25-23 win.
Springfield will play again on Saturday night when they make the short trip to take on local-foe Elms for a 7pm game.
