Ithaca, N.Y. - November 5, 2021 - Competing for the first time in 614 days, the Springfield College wrestling team made their return to the mats on Friday afternoon at the Ithaca Invitational. The Pride have seven student-athletes who have advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals, while another 19 are still in contention to place in the wrestle backs.
Among the 11 teams in the competition, Springfield is in sixth place with 33.5 points after the first day.
Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.), who was ranked No. 7 in the preseason national rankings at 125, was the top-seed in the weight class to kick off the season and delivered a 13-3 major decision over Brett Blaess from Baldwin Wallace. At 133 pounds, Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) was the four seed and began his year with a 16-0 technical fall against Corey Cope of Western New England.
At 141 pounds, the nation's ninth-ranked wrestler in Chris Trelli (Bristol, Conn.) began his season with a 10-5 decision over JWU's Craig Sampson and followed with an 8-0 major decision against Colby Reilly from WNE.
Seeded third at 149, Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) had three victories on Friday, starting 7-2 decision against Nikko Walsh from Castleton before a 6-5 decision over Thomas DiResta of JWU. Parrot then added an 8-1 decision against WNE's Cam Hines to advance to the quarterfinals.
At 184, top-seeded Dillan Palaszewski (Gallway, N.Y.) was tremendous to start the season, posting a win by pinfall over Jacob Minier of Oswego State in just 1:43 before needing only 56 seconds to pin Kyle Durkin from Western New England. In his lone bout of the night, Mark Thomas (Townsend, Mass.) scored a 9-3 decision versus AIC's Markys Lissaint.
And in his debut for the Pride, Michael Filieri (Garfield, N.J.) pinned Castleton's Camrin Russell in 2:25 and Mason Sprinkel of Norwich in 3:35 to highlight Springfield's efforts at 285.
