Providence, R.I. - December 11, 2021 - Led by an individual title from Joseph Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.), the Springfield College wrestling team had a strong showing at the Scott Viera Open, hosted by Roger Williams.
Parsons delivered the win at 149 pounds as he went 4-0 on the day. The senior started off his tournament by pinning Tagan Welch from Roger Williams in 4:28 before posting a 3-1 decision over JWU's Victor Perllesi. In the semifinals, Parsons produced a 4-3 win against Ben Bariso of Roger Williams and then topped Browns' Sam McMonagle, 5-3, for the title.
The Pride had three other wrestlers take third in their respective weight classes. Making his debut at 141 pounds, Jacques St. Jean (Goffstown, N.H.) went 4-1 with a pinfall in the opening round before later topping Josh Roberts from Johnson & Wales, 3-1, in the third-place bout.
John Summers (Fairfield, Conn.) took third at 184 as he owned a 3-1 record on the day with two pins, including one in 1:57 against Armani Dotson from Roger Williams in the third-place match.
At 157, Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) continued to impress as he finished third. Going 3-1 on the day, the first-year won all his matches by pinfall, pushing his season total to nine already, as the first-year needed just 28 seconds to put Carson Barry from JWU on his back to take third.
Springfield will next compete in the NWCA National Duals when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky on January 6-7.
