Springfield, Mass. - April 10, 2021 - The Springfield College women's tennis returned to Appleton Courts and battled to a 5-4 victory over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. 

The win boosts Springfield's record to 2-0 on the season, while the Lyons competed for the first time this year and slipped to 0-1.

The Pride was trailing 2-1 heading into singles play as the No. 1 doubles squad of Rielly Malz (South Glastonbury, Conn.) and Marian Bulkley (Durham, N.H.) was able to earn a point following their 8-3 win.

Malz continued her impressive play this season by cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top spot in singles play to even the match up at 2-2.  Heidi Schuman (Nassau, N.Y.) followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5, only to have Wheaton respond with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to regain a 4-3 edge.  However, Gabriella Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) delivered a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 2, setting up the deciding match at the No. 6 spot.  Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) then came through for Springfield, earning a 6-3, 7-5 (7-5) victory to seal the come-from-behind win for the Pride. 

Springfield will compete again next Saturday when it travels to face Babson for a 1 pm tilt.
