Norton, Mass. – April 16, 2021 - The Springfield College men's soccer team delivered a 3-2 victory over Wheaton College in their first game of the season on Friday afternoon on Nordin Field.
Springfield's last game was played 531 days ago and was a 1-0 setback to Wheaton on November 2, 2019. Today's contest featured three 30-minute periods.
After Wheaton scored the game's first goal off a corner kick in the opening session, Springfield benefitted from an own-goal by the Lyons to even the contest up. In the second, Finn Welch (Williamstown, Mass.) won the ball on the right side of the field and found Thomas Sojka (Bellingham, Mass.) up the flank. A combination play between Sojka and Jack Rosenberg (Simsbury, Conn.) resulted in a foul in the box, and Rosenberg hammered home the penalty attempt to put the Pride on top, 2-1.
In the third, pressure in Wheaton's defensive third by Ethan Boileau (Branford, Conn.) forced the Lyons to turn the ball over as Jaxon Tamulaites (Bristol, R.I.) gained possession for the Pride. Tamulaites would then slot home a bid into the right side netting for what would prove to be the eventual game-winning marker. The Lyons would tack on penalty kick of their own in the final seconds to complete the scoring.
Chris Prizio (Trumbull, Conn.) played the first and third periods while Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) played the second period, as both were strong for the Pride in the driving wind and sleet.
The Pride will hit the pitch again on Friday, April 23 when it hosts Western New England at 7 pm on Brock-Affleck Field.
