Wrestling Competes In Wildcat Open

Providence, R.I. - January 22, 2022 - The Springfield College wrestling team had a number of student-athletes compete in the Wildcat Open on Saturday afternoon at Johnson & Wales.

Highlighting the Pride's efforts was Jacques St. Jean (Goffstown, N.H.), as the senior placed third at 141.  After opening up the tournament with a 9-7 overtime win over Coast Guard's Ronald Gruen, St. Jean benefitted from a pair of forfeits to reach the semifinals. After falling by a 3-1 decision, St. Jean pinned Anthony Martin from Coast Guard in 3:36 and then prevailed in overtime by an 8-6 margin against Mason Purvis from Coast Guard to take third.

Joseph Parson (Waldwick, N.J.) also had a strong showing in taking fourth at 149.  A pin in 3:45 against Alfred State's Anthony Miraglia and 6-4 decision versus Patrick Coffron of Shenandoah landed Parsons in the quarterfinals.  A 7-4 decision against JWU's Matthew Garcia advanced Parsons to the semifinals, but a 6-0 decision landed him in the consolations, where he battled to a 4-2 decision over Matthew Laurie from Sacred Heart before being edged in the third-place bout by an 11-8 decision.

On Sunday, Springfield will compete in the NEWA Dual Championship at Johnson & Wales.
