Box Score New London, Conn. - October 1, 2022 - The Springfield College women's soccer program takes its fourth shutout win of the season with a 2-0 victory at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon in NEWMAC play.
Springfield improves to 5-2-1 and 3-0 in league play, while Coast Guard drops to 4-4-1 and 1-2 in NEWMAC competition. Springfield outshot the Bears, 15-9, with eight shots put on target. Coast Guard held the slight edge in corner kicks.
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) earned the shutout win with three saves. Emily Scharnitky turned away six shots in the setback for Coast Guard.
The first half was stuck in stalemate as each team only had three shots on goal each for the first 45 minutes. Scharnitky saved a pair of early chances from Springfield to keep the Pride quiet offensively. At 24:22, Coast Guard nearly got a goal as Riley Vicinanzo went right, but hit the post which left the game goaless. Ryan made all three saves in the first half with the latter coming in the 41st-minute as the sophomore punched out the try by Anna Carleton. In transition, Nicole Sweeney (Grafton, Mass.) put a shot just outside the range, and then put a shot on goal for the Pride shortly after in hopes of taking the lead, but another first half save from Scharnitky kept the game at 0-0 at the break.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 79th-minute by Springfield after a corner pass from Vasiliky Rizos (Southampton, Mass.) found Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.), who pushed in the shot over Scharnitky for the go-ahead goal. Walker was not done yet as the junior forward came striding down the field shortly after and redirected a pass from Sweeney for the second goal of the game to put the Pride ahead 2-0. The Springfield defense put in solid work over the second half only allowing two shot attempts from the Bears, which gave way for the Pride to take the 2-0 shut out on the road.
Springfield will now shift its attention to a 7:00 home game against Smith on Wednesday night.
