Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 19, 2022 - The Springfield College women's soccer program came from behind to defeat Wheaton, 3-1, on Wednesday night in an important NEWMAC match.
Springfield jumps up to 8-4-1 and 6-2 in the conference standings. Wheaton drops to 7-7-1 on the year and evens out to 4-4 in the NEWMAC. The Pride outshot the Lyons, 27-11 and earned four corners in the contest.
With two first-half goals, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) became just the second women's soccer student-athlete to ever score 50 or more goals at Springfield College. Dale has score two or more goals 11 times in her collegiate career. Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) also tallied a goal in the contest. Between the pipes, A. Harper (Taylorsville, Utah) contributed four saves to earn their fourth win of the season.
Patricia Bandrup turned away eight shots in the setback for Wheaton.
Springfield was afforded early chances as the Pride owened possession for the majority of the first 20 minutes of play. In the 16th-minute, Wheaton broke away for its first scoring opportunity, however Sonia Dugger (Belchertown, Mass.) slid in from the side to break up the attack and keep the game scoreless. Just a mintue later, Wheaton was able to break the tie as Gaby Diaz turned in a pass to Sadie Recht for the lower right goal to go up 1-0. At 32:13, Dale took a deflected shot from Kaitlyn Suller (Oveido, Fla.) and went bar down to even the game at 1-1 for the Pride. Just six minutes later, Dale notched her second goal as Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) laid a pass inside to allow the senior to pump in the go-ahead goal.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Pride tallied its third unanswered goal when Kate Minoudis (Columbia, Conn.) lofted a cross perfectly to Healy, who dropped in the goal to help put Springfield up 3-1. Wheaton had a chance to cut into the Pride's lead at 55:54 when Diaz took a deep shot on goal, but had the shot ring off the crossbar, and later Trinity Cloud had a similar result in the 77th-minute, which kept the Lyons' down two goals. Harper closed the game out with a pair of saves for Springfield to cruise to the win.
The Pride will not compete again until it travels to Clark next Wednesday at 7 pm.
