Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) turned away nine shots in the setback.
The first half proved to be locked in a scoreless tie for the entire 45 minutes with each team settling in defensively. Springfield seemed to get in the way of each of the Lyons' scoring chances throughout the stanza. In the 29th-minute, Jack Rosenberg (Simsbury, Conn.) stuck out a leg to clear away the try from Jon DiDario to keep the score at 0-0. At 32:41, Sebastian Correia (West Warwick, R.I.) made an impressive effort to close out on Wheaton's Alasdair Ferrier and not let the forward get a shot off. Another hustle effort from Chayne Bruneau (Glastonbury, Conn.) helped stave off a late goal from Wheaton in the final minutes of the half to bring the game to a 0-0 score at the break.
At 48:53 in the second half, Wheaton took the lead as Ferrier took a touch from Ewan Noble and rose a shot over the arm of Knibbs to put the Lyons ahead, 1-0. The Lyons tacked on two more in the half from Nobles and another from Luke Strange to push Wheaton in front 3-0. At 63:54, the Pride was able to respond with a goal as Cris Cruz (Greenwich, Conn.) popped up a ball into the box and Parker Thornton (Malden, Mass.) headed in the pass to close the gap to 3-1. From that point on, Knibbs collected six saves to finish the game, but the Pride only was limited offensively leading to the setback.
Springfield will now shift its focus to its October 15 matchup with Coast Guard at 12 pm.
