Springfield, Mass. - November 12, 2022 - The Springfield College wrestling team captured the championship at the 2022 City of Springfield Championship on Saturday. The Pride defeated local foes Western New England and Springfield Technical CC in the Blake Arena on the campus of Springfield College.
The Pride got off to a stellar start on the day, as they swept STCC 50-0, and then to finish off the day, the Pride faced WNE and sealed the championship with a 24-16 victory.
Springfield dominated the competition against Springfield Technical as they would cruise to an early lead as Carlos Arango (Massapequa, N.Y.) would pin his opponent at 125 to give the Pride an early 6-0 lead. Joey Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) and Luke Temple (Jackson, N.J.) would extend the lead to 21-0 off of a 6-1 decision at 141 and a pin at 149 respectively. The Pride would go on to win all ten matches, highlighted by tough bouts by Sam Ware (Oakham, Mass.), Max Grzymala (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.), and Michael Filieri (Garfield, N.J.), which allowed the Pride to pick up the 50-0 victory.
In the final matches of the day against WNE, Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) would start the Pride off strong at 125, with a pin just over a minute into the match, giving the Pride a 6-0 lead. Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) would follow right behind at 133, nabbing a 6-5 decision. Parsons and Temple would extend the lead to 15-0 after the first four matches.
Gryzmala would stop a three-match skid later in the duel at 184, winning by decision 7-6. And after losing at 197, Filieri would bring home the championship for the Pride by pinning his opponent 30 seconds into his match.
Springfield wrestling will host the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, November 19 at 10 am in the Springfield College Field House.
