Box Score Beverly, Mass. - November 16, 2022 - The Springfield College women's basketball program earned a 62-56 win over Endicott on Wednesday night in non-conference play at MacDonald Gym.
Nationally-ranked Springfield improves to 2-1, while Endicott drops its first game of the season. The Pride outrebounded Endicott, 48-33, and shot 13-of-17 from the free throw line in the contest.
Angela Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) put together a monster double-double for Springfield as the sophomore forward totaled 16 points and 18 rebounds. Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) led all scorers with 17 points to go along with seven boards and three steals. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) totaled five blocks to anchor the Pride's defensive effort.
Endicott was led by Sarah Dempsey with 15 points, while Tara Laugeni added 12 points and seven rebounds in the setback.
The score was 6-5 with 6:43 left in the quarter after Dempsey knocked down a jumper for the Gulls, however, Springfield closed the period on a 12-2 run to get up to 18-6. With just four seconds left in the quarter, Katelyn Konareski drilled a three to cut it back to 18-9 just before the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Gulls dropped the deficit to eight as Dempsy scored in transition making the score 23-15 in favor of the Pride. From there, Springfield went on a 9-0 burst that was capped off by a Emma Glaser (Norfolk, Mass.) three-pointer with 3:10 to go to put the Pride ahead, 32-15. Springfield grabbed its largest lead of the game at 34-16 with 1:30 to go in the half with Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) finishing in transition and were able to go into the break with a 36-19 lead.
The Gulls cut it to single digits at 40-31 with 4:33 remaining with a Dempsey lay-in, but on the other end, Hourihan found Madden all alone on the wing for the three to put the Pride back up 43-31. Endicott cut it to 45-37 behind back-to-back layups with just one minute left in the quarter, which allowed the hosts' to gain momentum heading into the fourth.
The Gulls' were able to bring the deficit to just one point as Katelyn Konareski drilled a three kick out three with three minutes to go in the fourth, forcing a Springfield timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Vinton put together a quick four points including a nice change of direction that gave Springfield a 58-53 cushion with 1:38 to play, but Endicott would not go away as Emily St. Thomas dropped in a three on the next possession to make it just a two-point game. Free throws from Czeremcha and Vinton allowed Springfield to go back up to 61-56 with 24 seconds left. Out of a timeout, Endicott looked for a three, however Hourihan came up with a huge rejection to seal the road victory for Springfield.
The Pride will return to Blake Arena on Saturday for a 1 pm matchup with Gordon.
