Worcester, Mass. - December 2, 2022 -The Springfield College women's and men's swimming and diving teams opened up the 2022 Gompei Invitational at WPI and is in fourth place with 1297.5 points.
The three-day invitiational is scored as a combined event and features nine teams from throughout the region, including several Division I opponents.
Carolyn Blenk (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Nina Lamb (Killingworth, Conn.), Mikaili Charlemagne (Casteries, St. Lucia), Kay Shen (Hong Kong) raced in the 200 medley relay and turned in a 1:47.90 to finish in fourth place. On the men's side, James Chan (Hong Kong), Jonathan Chan (Hong Kong), Daniel Forsythe (East Providence, R.I.), and Luke Zonghetti (Tolland, Conn.) posted a 1:33.60 in the event en route to fifth place.
Elizabeth Fraser (Westfield, Mass.) was the Pride's top finisher in the women's 200 IM following her 2:10.60, while Jonathan Chan registered a 1:57.28 on the men's side.
Charlemagne would later sprint her way to a second-place finish in the 50 free in 24.05 and Zonghetti posted a 21.90 for the Pride in the men's race. In the 500 free, Emma Savoie (Milford, Conn.) completed the race in 5:25.98 and Jordon McMillan (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago) recorded a 4:47.09. In the women's 200 breast, the Pride had three of the top five finishers, led by Lamb's second-place time of 2:24.77, and Rocky Tang (Hong Kong) added a team-best time of 2:10.22 for the men.
In the 100 fly, Charlemagne registered a 59.09, while the Chan brothers each finished in the top four, led by a 50.60 from James. In the morning prelims, Jonathan would set a new Springfield College record with a 50.55, besting the mark his older brother set in 2021. Luca Brashear (Amherst, Mass.) outdistanced the field to capture the one-meter board with a 442.75 to win by nearly 30 points, and Megan Crawford (Agawam, Mass.) scored a 328.30 on the three-meter to finish fifth.
Closing out the evening in the 800 free relay, Fraser, Shen Lefteri Roba (Worcester, Mass.), and Charlemagne combined for a 8:08.05 before the Chan's, McMillan, and Dominic Marco (Bath, Maine) delivered a 7:08.91.
Springfield is back in action on Saturday for the second day of the Invitational which starts at 9 am.
