Manginelli, Parrott, and Deguire Win Titles As Wrestling Finishes Second at Petrfoes Invitational

Grantham, Pa. - December 3, 2022 - The Springfield College wrestling team had three student-athletes win individual titles as the squad finished second at the 2022 Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah over the weekend.

The Pride went into the day with eight student-athletes in the semifinals and concluded the weekend with Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.), Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) and Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) all taking first place in their weight classes.  Springfield totaled 159.5 points in the tournament to finish as the team runner-up behind Alvernia's team score of 201.5.

At 125 pounds, Manginelli picked up a 6-2 decision in the semifinals before besting Joey Lamparelli from Muhlenberg by a score of 7-2 to claim the title.  Parrott produced an 8-2 decision in his semifinals at 149 and followed up with a 4-0 decision against Cortland's Angelo Centrone for his second tournament victory over the season after previously winning a title at the Ithaca Invitational.  After three pins on Friday, Deguire pinned nationally-ranked Jason Rezac of Alvernia in 2:43 in the semifinals before a 34-second pin in the championship against Robert Lawlor of Alvernia as the won a 157 pound weight class that featured multiple wrestlers who are appearing in national polls. 

Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) bested Wilson Gomes of Bridgewater State, 9-5, in the 133 pound semifinals but fell to nationally-ranked Jayden Cardenas of Cortland, 10-4, in the championship. Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) also took runner-up honors in 197 pounds following a 7-0 decision in the semifinals before bowing out in the title bout. 

Joey Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) wrestled back tough in the consolation bracket after a setback in the quarterfinals at 141 pounds to finish in third, Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.) placed fourth at 125 pounds, as did Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) at 141 pounds. 

At 157 pounds, Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.) finished seventh, but earned the distinction of the most pins in the fewest amount of time in the tournament with five first-period falls, and Ty Stewart (Dracut, Mass.) placed sixth at 141 pounds. Doug Clark (Lynn, Mass.) also took seventh at 197, while at 285, Springfield had three wrestlers in the top eight as Michael Filieri (Garfield, N.J.) placed fifth,Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) finished sixth, and Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.J.) took eighth. 

Springfield will square off with Roger Williams on Friday night at 7 pm.
