Providence, R.I. - February 20, 2022 - Several members of the Springfield College wrestling program competed in the NEWA Futures Tournament, hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
As a team, the Pride scored 87 points to finish third among the 14 teams in the field.
Joseph Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) had a tremendous tournament as he finished second at 149 pounds. Parsons went 3-1 on the day and earned a spot in the finals following an 8-2 decision over Craig Sampson from JWU before falling to Matthew Garcia from JWU by pinfall in 5:34.
At 174, Brayden Grim (Ledyard, Conn.) had five victories on the day, including a pair of technical falls and delivered a pin in 4:24 over WNE's Jaylen Hawkins in the consolation semifinals en route to taking third in his weight class.
At 157 pounds Jeremy Scutellaro (Massapequa, N.Y.) took fourth as he had a 4-2 record on the day. After starting off with three wins to reach the semifinals, Scutellaro was edged by decision, but bounced back with a decision of his own in the consolation semifinals before being clipped by a 9-8 decision in the third-place bout by Edward Marinilli from JWU.
John Summers (Fairfield, Conn.) also had a strong showing for Springfield at 184 pounds as the first-year had four victories by pinfall before finishing fourth in the tournament.
