Box Score New Paltz, N.Y. - March 10, 2022 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team picked up a four-set victory at New Paltz on Thursday night by the scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16.
Ranked No. 2 in the country in the latest AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, Springfield is now 17-1 on the year, while the 13th-ranked Hawks had its nine-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 14-4.
Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) delivered a match-best 17 kills and Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) added 12 kills to pace the Pride's offense. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) produced 34 assists, 10 digs, and four aces, Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) registered 17 digs, and Nate Reynolds (Baltimore, Md.) was credited with a match-best five blocks. Springfield held the Hawks to a .089 hitting percentage on the evening.
The opening set was back-and-forth, as the teams were tied 15 times and the lead changed seven times. The hosts jumped out to a 9-6 lead as Springfield called for an early timeout and the Hawks maintained a 19-16 advantage following their fifth ace of the set. However, Springfield would batle back to take a 22-21 lead when Brandow ripped a kill off the block in transition as the hosts called for a timeout of their own. Out of the break, New Paltz closed the set on 4-1 burst to take a 25-23 win in a frame where the Pride was held to just seven kills.
Springfield's offense struggled to find its footing in the second set, but the Pride benefitted from New Paltz hitting at a -.034 clip thanks to eight attack errors. Trailing 15-12 midway through the frame, Springfield battled back to knot the frame up at 17-all. The Pride would eventually earn a 22-21 lead and Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) later blasted a cross court kill to complete the 25-23 victory.
With Lilley at the end line, Springfield reeled off the first five points of the third set and never looked back as it coasted to a 25-18 set win where Brandow produced five kills for the visitors.
In the fourth, Springfield racked up 14 kills at a .565 clip, fueled by five kills from Anderson. Facing an 11-10 deficit, Springfield poured on a 10-2 surge, capped off by one of Brandow's four kills in the set as the Hawks called for timeout at 20-13. The Pride didn't let up and wrapped up the four-game victory with a 25-16 fourth-set win following another big swing from Anderson.
On Saturday, Springfield will host MIT in Dana Gymnasium at 2 pm.
