Softball Closes Out Spring Break Trip With Two Shutout Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, Fla. - March 18, 2022 - The Springfield College softball program finished off its participation in The Spring Games in impressive fashion, starting with a 10-0 win over Minn.-Morris in five innings, before defeating SUNY New Paltz, 5-0, on Friday afternoon at Hancock Park.

Springfield will return to campus with a 8-2 record. The Pride take on Eastern Connecticut in doubleheader action at home on Friday, March 25 starting at 3:00.

Springfield 10, Minn.-Morris 0

The Pride got going with three runs in opening inning as Sam Witmer (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) both gave the Pride RBI singles. Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) closed out the inning with an RBI single of her own to score Witmer and give Springfield a 3-0 boost.

Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) and Ashley Pugliese (Huntington Station, N.Y.) held down the circle as the pair combined to allow just one hit over the five innings.

In the top of the third, the Pride ripped off three-straight singles to open the inning. Seyfert came up and delivered a base-clearing double for Springfield, before scoring herself on an error to expand the Springfield lead to 7-0. Seyfert wasn't finished as the first-year knocked in another 2 RBI single in the top of the fourth and gave Springfield a 9-0 lead. One more run in the fifth would envoke the mercy rule and give the Pride the shutout victory.

Springfield 5, SUNY New Paltz 0

Gillan Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) was dominate in the second game of the day tossing all seven innings and earning three strikeouts in shutout fashion.

The Pride broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second as Seyfert sparked the inning with a single up the middle to advance Kayla Stvan (Parlin, N.J.), who was walked at the first at bat. Natalie Stoner (Wynantskill, N.Y.) placed a hit into shallow right to advance both Stvan and Seyfert, before Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) launched a double into center that cleared the bases and allowed Springfield to take the first lead. Mackenzie Doyle (Gloucester, R.I.) connected on a single up the middle to bring around Fernandez and give Springfield a 4-0 lead. The Pride stretched its lead to 5-0 in the next inning as Seyfert's bat remained hot with an RBI double to add another run to score.

Kane allowed five hits over the following four innings and left five New Paltz batters on base to help keep any rally at bay to help Springfield close out its second shutout of the day.
