Box Score Springfield, Mass. - March 2, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program fought its way to a 13-11 non-conference victory over Framingham State on Wednesday afternoon at Stagg Field.
Springfield improves to 2-0 on the season and hands the Rams its first loss of the season.
Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) produced a pair of goals with three helpers to ignite the Springfield offense, while Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) and Holly Rivers (Danbury, Conn.) each pitched three scores of their own. Gianna Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scooped up five ground balls and won six draws for the Pride. Allison Delmonte (Bridgewater, Mass.) added five draw controls, while Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) recorded nine saves in the win. Springfield owned the draw beating out Framingham, 20-7. Springfield was also had 16 successful clears in the game.
Framingham was led by the powerful play of Regan Fein, who scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists. Leah Green added a hat trick in the setback. For the game, Framingham held a slight edge in shots, 29-26, and had 17 ground balls.
Framingham State took an early 2-1 lead as Hannah Guerin came across the middle and dipped in the goal at the 9:41, however Springfield would even the score at 2-2 at 8:48 as Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) darted into the circle to score an unassisted strike, which sparked the Pride offensively as the hosts scored six unanswered goals to finish the first quarter with a 7-2 lead.
The Rams clipped into the Springfield lead in the second quarter with as Fein assisted on one and scored another in the frame to bring the score to 7-5 with 1:53 remaining in the half. At 1:07, Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.) stuck a free position attempt to boost Springfield up to 8-5 before the end of the half.
With 11:23 to go in the third Springfield had grown a five-goal lead as O'Connor fed Martel in the middle, who spun left for the inside finish to make the Pride's lead 10-5. Following the Martel strike, Framingham responded with a three-goal burst that was capped off by a free position goal from Tar Palermo at 4:28. Rivers would draw contact and convert the free position score for the Pride to give Springfield an 11-8 lead with 3:17 remaining. Another Palermo goal before the end of the quarter made it an 11-9 game with one quarter to play.
Framingham State continued to claw its way back into the game as Fein would connect on her third goal of the contest at the 3:48 mark and bring the visitors within one at 12-11. At 3:25, Moody faced back-to-back free position shots from the visitors and was able to make the defensive stand and preserve the Springfield lead. Rivers punched in another goal off the find from Pichel with 44 seconds left to give Springfield a 13-11 edge, before Moody closed out the game for the Pride with save in the final five seconds.
Springfield will to Amherst on Tuesday, March 8 at 6:00.
