Strong First Quarter Pushes Women's Lacrosse Past Mount Holyoke

South Hadley, Mass. - April 2, 2022 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse program posted a season-high in goals as the Pride defeated Mount Holyoke, 23-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. 

Springfield improves to 5-3 and 2-0 in NEWMAC play. Springfield only committed seven turnovers, picked up 21 ground balls, and won 17 draws in the contest. 

Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) each scored four goals for Springfield. Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) both posted a hat trick in the win. Lily Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) contributed three assists to the offensive output that featured 12 student-athletes finding the back of the net in the victory. Emily McDermott (Marshfield, Mass.) was credited with the victory in net. 

Allie Brown posted four goals for the Lyons. 

The Pride used an 11-goal first quarter to pull ahead early against the Lyons. Pichel kicked off the scoring just 17 seconds into the game as the senior fired in a free-position for the first goal of the game. Pichel scored four goals in the quarter to help inflate the Springfield lead. Springfield scored pair of advantage goals from Altebrando and Pichel to take a 11-0 with 4:01 to play in the first. Mount Holyoke put a stop to the scoring spree as Emma Legacki cashed in on an unassisted strike at the 2:16 mark in the first quarter. 

The Lyons Emma Tover forced a turnover at 10:36, which led to Legacki kicking to Allie Brown for the successful transition opportunity, bringing the score to 11-2. Springfield poured on four more goals to close the half as Altebrando scored a pair with Carlee Crispens (Wallinford, Conn.) registering her first goal of the season with 12 seconds to play in the second quarter to make it 15-2 at the break.

Springfield outscored the Lyons, 3-1, in the third quarter. Andresen notched her third score of the game at the 6:56 mark of the third period to help Springfield take a 17-3 lead, before Samantha Van Horn (South Windsor, Conn.) scored on an unassisted try with 2:33 remaining to make it a 18-3 advantage. 

 Allie Brown kicked off the fourth with a score for the Lyons to make 18-4, however, Altebrando added another score at 10:27 with Lauren Landino (South Windsor, Conn.) scoring in transition to boost the Pride up to 20-5. At 5:41, Brown scored another unassisted goal for the Lyons, before Springfield rattled off three goals to boost its lead to 23-5 helping the Pride coast to the conference win. 

Springfield will travel to Western Connecticut tomorrow at 1:00.
