Springfield, Mass. - April 27, 2022 - The Springfield College women's tennis team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion in a 7-2 victory against Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Appleton Courts on Wednesday.
The win lifted Springfield's record to 12-5-1 as the Pride tied its highest win total in Division III program history, matching the 12-win output of the 1994 and 2016 squads. Additionally, the Pride improved to 5-3 win the conference win as it clinched a spot in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship and earned its most wins in conference play since the 2001 squad went 6-2.
It was a gritty performance in doubles play as the Pride earned all three points, including a pair of comeback victories. After Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) and Jorja Mederick (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) earned an 8-6 win at No. 3, Gabriella Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) rallied for an 8-6 triumph at the top spot. Facing a 7-3 deficit at No. 2, Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) and Rielly Malz (South Glastonbury, Conn.) delivered and 8-7 win to sweep the doubles points.
Malz was first off the court in singles with her 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Mederick clinched the victory following her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6. Rosselli would later add a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5 and Manataweewat tacked on the Pride's seventh victory of the day following her 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 3.
