Box Score Springfield, Mass. - April 6, 2022 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team swept Division I foe Sacred Heart in straight sets on Wednesday night in Blake Arena by the scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 to conclude their regular season.
The nation's top-ranked team in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, Springfield improved to 26-1 on the year. The Pride will now await its postseason fate as the NCAA Division III Championship Selection Show will air on NCAA.com at 10 am on Monday, April 11.
Springfield's offense produced a .538 team hitting percentage, with Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) notching 37 assists in three sets to go along with five digs and two aces. Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) and Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) each tallied 13 kills, Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) recorded seven kills, and middles Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) and Nate Reynolds (Baltimore, Md.) combined for 10 kills and four blocks. Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) was credited with a match-best seven digs as the Pride held the visitors to a .134 hitting percentage.
Springfield raced out to a 5-1 lead to start the match after Brandow buried a ball out of the backrow and later ripped a kill off the block to force the Pioneers into a timeout at 10-6. Sacred Heart pulled within 12-11 following four-straight miscues by the Pride, but Springfield would push its lead back to 21-16 on a Reynolds kill. Anderson later converted down on the line on set point for the Pride's 16th kill of the set for the 25-22 win.
The second set featured six ties, as the Pride broke open a 12-12 stalemate with a three-point burst capped off by Brandow's serve clipping the tape for an ace. Springfield, which hit .611 in the stanza, earned set point on Anderson's fourth kill of the set before Sacred Heart tallied their seventh service error of the net for the 25-21 victory.
Sacred Heart came out strong from the service line in the third and jumped out to an 8-3 lead following their third ace. However, Springfield poured on a 14-5 surge, highlighted by consecutive aces from Lilley, as the Pioneers called for a timeout at 17-13. Anderson, who had six kills in the frame, blistered an ace for match point and Brandow sealed the triumph, connecting out of the back row at 25-18 as the Pride won in straight sets for the ninth-consecutive match.
