Springfield, Mass. - May 3, 2022 - The Springfield College women's tennis team earned a 5-1 victory over Wheaton College this afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Quarterfinals on Appleton Courts.
Springfield which earned a spot in last year's NEWMAC Championship, advances to this year's NEWMAC Championship Semifinals and will travel to nationally-ranked MIT this weekend. The win boosted the Pride to 13-5-1 on the season as Springfield now has its most wins in Division III program history and reached its highest win total since the 1990 squad achieved 14 victories.
After earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, its highest ever in a NEWMAC Championship, Springfield came out and captured two of the three doubles points. Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) and first year Jorja Mederick (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) powered their way to an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 spot, while Rielly Malz (South Glastonbury, Conn.) combined with first year Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) to deliver an 8-3 victory of their own at No. 2. At the top spot, Wheaton's Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) jumped out to an early lead and held on for an 8-3 victory.
In singles action, Mederick coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 and Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) prevailed by a 6-2, 6-4 margin at No. 5. Malz earned a 6-2 win in the first set at No. 4, and after slipping 6-2 in the second, delivered an impressive showing in the third set with a 6-1 victory to clinch the match for her squad.
