Women's Soccer Earns 2-1 Victory Over Western New England

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - September 14, 2022 - The Springfield College women's soccer program pulled out a 2-1 win against Western New England on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield levels out at 2-2 on the season while Western New England drops to 3-2. The Pride held the shot advantage, 13-9, and earned four corner kicks.

Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) turned away four shots in the second half to help Springfield take the victory.

In the ninth-minute, Gabby Scott (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) intercepted a clear and set a pass out to Nicole Sweeney (Grafton, Mass.), who punched in the early goal for Springfield. Western New England returned the favor shortly after as Danielle McCarthy took the ball from the right box and lofted a shot over the outstretched Ryan for the tying goal to make it 1-1 with 10:16 on the clock.

The Pride searched for a chance to go ahead before the half as Springfield placed six shots on goal in the first stanza. At 24:35, Mu Kue (Hartford, Conn.) nearly added a strike for the Pride from outside the box, yet McLaughlin punched out the try to keep it a 1-1 game. Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) added three shots on goal, which applied pressure on the Golden Bears' defense, but could not come away with the score.

In the 63rd minute of the second half, Isabella Montalvo broke through to attack the Springfield box and aimed for the opposite post, however Ryan dove down for the save to halt the Western New England try. Springfield was able to take a 2-1 lead as Dale set up the attack, dished to Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Fla.), then Suller delivered a pass back that Dale touched to the right and drilled into the right side of the goal to take the one-goal lead. Following the Pride goal, the Golden Bears threatened to tie the game again, but Ryan fended off two attempts from Gabby Sasone to keep the edge over Golden Bears. Springfield possessed the ball well for the remainder of the half to not allow Western New England another chance to tie, allowing the Pride to secure the win.

Springfield will open up NEWMAC play on Saturday at 1:00 against Mount Holyoke as it continues a five-game homestand.
