Williamsport, Pa. - January 14, 2023 - The Springfield College wrestling team split with Washington & Lee and York on Saturday afternoon to finish seventh at the Budd Whitehill Duals.

Springfield dropped a 20-13 score to Washington & Lee to start the day but bounced back with a solid 26-15 victory over York to place seventh in the 16-team field. 

In a 20-13 setback to Washington & Lee, the Pride got off to a great start winning three of the first four matches.  Joey Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) delivered a 5-4 win over Riley Parker, who was ranked in the top 10 in the country as Manginelli avenged last year's loss to Parker at the NCAA Division III Championships.  Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) followed with a workmanlike 10-1 major decision at 133, and after the Generals used a late takedown to snag a decision at 141, Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) powered his way to an 8-5 decision at 149.  W&L would respond with back-to-back major decisions, only to have Brayden Grim (Gales Ferry, Conn.) produce an 8-4 decision at 174 to give Springfield a 13-11 cushion.  However, Springfield would drop the final three bouts by decisions to fall by a 20-13 score. 

Versus York, the match started with a showdown of two-nationally ranked wrestlers at 125, which the Spartans would prevail in a 4-3 decision.  Gianni Manginelli answered with a 5-2 decision at 133 and Joey Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) turned his man late in the second period for a pin in 4:32 to put the Pride ahead for good.  After York added another decision at 141, Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) made quick work of his opponent with a pin in 29 seconds, and Max Grzymala (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.) registered a 7-2 decision at 165.  The teams would trade wins in the final four bouts, with Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) earning a 24-9 tech fall at 184 and Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) grinding out an 8-2 decision at 285. 

Springfield will travel to Vermont for a dual with Norwich on Wednesday at 6 pm.
