Springfield, Mass. - January 22, 2023 - The Springfield College wrestling team finished fourth at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals Championship on Sunday in the Springfield College Field House.
Springfield had a tremendous start to the day with a 50-0 victory over Norwich before cruising past Roger Williams, 34-11. In the semifinals, Springfield was upended by the nation's second-ranked team in Johnson & Wales by a 30-13 margin and then fell to No. 13 Castleton, 25-6, in the third-place bout. For his efforts on the day, Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) was named to the NEWA Duals All-Tournament Team.
The Pride was dominant to open up the competition as it powered its way past Norwich, 50-0, and produced six victories by pinfall. Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.) started off the match at 125 with a 5-3 decision and Manginelli followed with a 16-1 technical fall at 133. Joey Parsons (Waldwick, N.J.) then produced an 8-6 decision at 141 before Lucien Perla (Stow, Mass.) delivered Springfield's first pinfall of the day in 6:24 at 149. Springfield would string together three-straight pins following Perla's stick as Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned a pin in 3:23 and Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.) put his opponent on his back in 1:28. Brayden Grim (Gales Ferry, Conn.) also added a first-period pin in 1:42 to make it a 35-0 score. At 184, Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) delivered a 7-2 decision before Doug Clark (Lynn, Mass.) and Michael Filieri (Garfield, N.J.) each produced six points for the Pride with first-period pins in 2:25 and 1:41 to close out the dual.
Against Roger Williams, Springfield was victorious in the first seven bouts to cruise to a 34-11 win. Paulino again started off things with a decision at 125, this time getting three points following a 10-3 win. Manginelli followed with a pin in 2:04, while Parsons added six more points for the Pride after his pin in 2:04 at 141. Chase Parrott (Stamford, Conn.) battled his way to an 11-3 major decision at 149 before Deguire delivered another impressive victory, this time pinning his opponent in just 29 seconds. Leonard produced his second pin of the day, which came in only 2:00, while Grim notched a 12-5 decision as the Pride's lead ballooned to 34-0. The Hawks would sandwich two decisions around a technical fall in the final three bouts to close out the match.
Versus Johnson & Wales, the Pride dropped a major decision at 125 but rebounded with the next two wins and Manginelli was workmanlike in a 16-5 major decision and Parsons grinded out a 4-2 decision. The Wildcats responded with a technical fall and overtime decision to regain a 12-7 lead, only to have Leonard deliver another pin as he needed just 1:22 to put Springfield back on top, 13-12. However, JWU would string together three-consecutive major decisions and tack on another decision to close out the match with the final four wins en route to a 30-13 triumph.
In the third-place match against Castleton, the teams traded decisions to start, with Manginelli producing his fourth win of the day with a 5-3 decision at 133. Deguire would later add a tough 3-2 decision at 157, but the Spartans would take the final five bouts, including four by decision, en route to finishing third in the tournament.
Springfield will next host Wesleyan on Friday evening at 7 pm
