Williamstown, Mass. - January 7, 2023 - Wrestling for the first time in nearly a month, the Springfield College wrestling program had several standout performances at the Williams Open on Saturday.
Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.) put together a great day as he went 4-0 en route to winning the title at 125 pounds. As the second seed in the tournament, Paulino produced two decisions and a major decision before grinding out a 4-3 win over top-seeded David Yeh from Williams to take first place. At 149, Luke Temple (Jackson, N.J.) was the top seed and he cruised to the individual title as he went 4-0, as he had two pins and two decisions, including a 7-2 victory over Matt Lucas from Roger Williams in the championship.
At 133 pounds, Brayan Mendez-Membreno (Port Chester, N.Y.) finished as the runner-up in his second-straight tournament, as he had two decisions and pinfall on Saturday before falling by a 5-2 decision in the championship to WNE's Austin Monteiro. Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) advanced to the finals of 141 pounds with a pinfall and decision before falling to top-seeded Tyler Williams from Roger Williams, 3-1, while Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.) also took second at 157 pounds as he produced two more pinfalls but was upended by Peter Kane, 8-0, in the championship.
After a quarterfinal loss, Lucien Perla (Stow, Mass.) wrestled back tough as he went 5-1 on the day to finish third at 149 pounds. Doug Clark (Lynn, Mass.) also took third at 197 pounds and Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) was fourth at 285.
The Pride will next compete in the Budd Whitehill Duals in Pennsylvania on January 13-14.
