Springfield, Mass. - December 8, 2023 - Wrestling under the lights in Blake Arena, the Springfield College wrestling team powered past visiting Roger Williams, 23-13, on Friday evening. 

Springfield, which entered the meet ranked No. 20 nationally in the most recent The Open Mat Poll, moved to 4-0 on the season, while Roger Williams evened its record to 2-2.

Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) started off the match with a 7-3 victory at 285 as produced four points in the third, including a point for riding time.  Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) battled tough for an 8-6 decision at 125, and Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.), the nation's 11th-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds, piled up the points in the third to pull away for a 19-3 technical fall to give the hosts an 11-0 advantage.  

Springfield added to its lead thanks to a gritty performance by Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.), who prevailed 9-6 at 141 and Ty Stewart (Dracut, Mass.) delivered an electric victory with a pinfall in just 1:42 at 149.  Roger Williams responded with a 12-4 major decision at 157 and a 2-0 decision at 165 to pull within 20-7.  Fueled by a key takedown midway through the third, Max Grzymala (Golden's Bridge, N.Y.) registered an 11-5 triumph at 174 to clinch the victory for the Pride.  The Hawks tacked on decisions at 184 and 197 to close out the match as Springfield prevailed by a 23-13 margin. 

Springfield will compete again this weekend on Saturday at the Scott Viera Open in Rhode Island.
