Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 1, 2023 - The Springfield College men's basketball team scored its most points of the season thus far to topple MIT, 91-74, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday night.

The win completes the season sweep of the Engineers for the Pride as it bumped its record to 6-14, 3-6 in conference play, while MIT dropped to 3-14, 1-8.

Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) was special in the victory as he erupted for a career-best 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting while Josiah Evely (Toronto, Ontario) came off the bench to score 17 points.  Panayiotis Kapanides(Bedford, Mass.) produced 14 points and John Paulino (New Bedford, Mass.) stuffed his stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.  For the night, Springfield shot 36-for-66 (55%) and turned 14 MIT turnovers into 19 points.

Tim Minicozz would account for 29 points for the visitors as he knocked down 10-of-17 from the field, including six from deep, Rome Delgado-Gonzalez turned in 19 points and seven boards. The Engineers would be outscored by a 42-28 in the paint on the night.

The visitors used a deep triple from Delgado-Gonzalez at the 12:30 mark to open up a 15-7 cushion, but Springfield would respond would an 11-3 spurt as Evely canned a trifecta from the right wing to knot the game up at 18-18 with just over nine minutes left in the stanza. After MIT came back down the floor and regained the lead on a leaner by Delgado-Gonzalez, Andrew Rocci (Plymouth, Mass.) converted a three-point play and Kapanides followed with an inside finish as the Pride lead grew to 25-20 at the 7:25 mark.  Evely produced a block, grabbed the rebound, and raced down the court for a finish with just over two minutes left to give the Pride a 38-27 cushion and the hosts would head into the halftime break with a 44-34 lead. Springfield was especially efficient on the offense end in the opening 20 minutes of play as the Pride shot 19-of-34 (56%) as Costa and Evely each netted 13 points.

Springfield was in control throughout the second half and Jack Cowan (Bedford, Mass.) stepped into a triple from straightaway with just over 12 minutes left in regulation to push the lead to 17 at 61-44.   The Pride would go on to lead by as many as 17 points five other times in the game as MIT could get no closer than 12 points.  Costa would account for 17 of the Pride's 47 second-half points as 10 different student-athletes would score in the frame.
