Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 1, 2023 - In a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Championship Quarterfinals, the Springfield College men's volleyball team cruised past New Paltz on Wednesday night inside Blake Arena. The Pride won by the scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-16.
Springfield, which was ranked No. 4 in the latest AVCA Division III National Poll, is now 5-1. The 7th-ranked Hawks, who were playing for the first time since January 21, dropped to 5-2.
Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) registered a match-high 11 kills at a .526 hitting percentage to go along with four digs and four aces, while Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) handed out 26 assists and notched four blocks in directing Springfield to a .490 hitting percentage. Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) chipped in seven kills and Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) turned in six kills and three blocks in the middle. The Pride limited the Hawks to just a .028 team hitting percentage.
Anderson would bury a kill and then rip back-to-back aces to give Springfield an early 3-1 lead before later putting away consecutive kills in transition to force the Hawks into a timeout at 12-8. Weislo would convert out of the back row to push the Pride's advantage to 21-16, only to have the visitors use a 4-1 burst make Springfield call for a timeout at 22-20. The Hawks would then commit consecutive errors and Springfield pulled out the 25-22 win following Anderson's sixth kill of the set.
Even at 6-6 in the second, Springfield used a 3-0 surge capped off by Anderson ripping a hard-angle kill, and the lead would grow to 13-7 after Ryan Roller (West Hartford, Conn.) blistered an ace out of a New Paltz timeout. The Hawks would get no closer than four points, and Mulvaney and Rouleau connected for a sensational kill out of the middle to conclude a 25-19 victory in a frame where the Pride hit .533.
It was all Springfield in the third as the Pride totaled 11 kills at a .643 clip while the Hawks hit -.130. Leading 8-6, Springfield took over with an 8-4 push, getting a huge block from Mulvaney and Rouleau to force the Hawks into their final timeout of the set. Six different student-athletes had at least one kill in the set for the Pride and the Hawks ninth attack error of the set sealed the 25-16 win.
Springfield will host a tri-match with Rivier and SUNY Potsdam beginning at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
