Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 10, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team hit at a .507 clip to cruise past visiting MIT in straight sets in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic on Friday night. The Pride won by the scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-16.
This marks 11-straight years that the Pride has advanced to the Morgan Classic Championship, which is in its 35th year of existence is regarded as the most historic event for collegiate men's volleyball on the East Coast. The Pride improved to 9-1 with the win, while the Engineers dropped to 6-3.
The Pride's .507 hitting percentage was its second-highest of the season as Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) totaled 34 assists and six blocks in running the offense. Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) terminated 14 kills at a .591 clip and added 10 digs and three aces, while Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tallied 11 kills of his own. Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was effective in the middle, totaling six kills on nine errorless attempts and four blocks.
Springfield was unstoppable in the first set as it produced 12 kills on 16 swings for a .750 hitting percentage. Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) found the corner in transition at 11-3 and Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) later added kill of his own to push the lead to 17-6. Weislo would seal the win with the Pride's fifth ace of the night for the 25-12 victory.
Springfield would call for a quick timeout in the second after going down 5-2, but respond with a 6-2 surge to take its first lead of the frame. Out of a MIT timeout, Rouleau would convert a one-handed set by Mulvaney out of the middle before Ethan Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) came off the bench and seized momentum for the Pride from the service line. Springfield would earn set point at 24-13 following a seven-point run by Weislo, and Mulvaney would put away Springfield's 13th kill of the set in the 25-14 win.
DeCamp and Mulvaney would commit on the pin for a block at 6-3 as the Engineers called for timeout and Decamp would score out of the middle at 15-9 to force the visitors into their final timeout of the night. In a set where Springfield would hit .522 behind five kills apiece from Weislo and Anderson, the hosts would cruise to the sweep with a 25-16 triumph.
