Worcester, Mass. - February 19, 2023 - The Springfield College women's swimming and diving team finished third at the 2023 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships, as the four-day event concluded up on Sunday night.
MIT racked up 1,441 total points over the course of the four-day event for its 12th-straight title, while Wheaton amassed 921.5 team points to take second for the fifth straight season. Springfield was third with 795.5 points followed by the U.S. Coast Guard in fourth with 593.5 and Wellesley rounding out the top five with 524.5. WPI finished sixth with 457.5 points and Babson placed seventh at 332. Mount Holyoke (275), Smith (245.5), and Clark (197) completed the final standings.
Springfield landed two of the top three finishers in the 100 free as Mikaili Charlemagne (Gros Islet, St. Lucia) produced a NCAA "B" cut time of 51.54 to finish in second place, while Kay Shen (Hong Kong) was a close third in 51.76.
In the 200 back, Emma Baumhauer (Fairport, N.Y.) led the way with a fifth-place time of 2:05.19, while Carolyn Blenk (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished eighth in 2:07.93 and Maddie Symecko (Southington, Conn.) took 10th in 2:10.61.
The Pride was also very impressive in the 200 breast with three in the top six, highlighted by Lefteri Roba's (Worcester, Mass.) third-place time of 2:21.77. Nina Lamb (Killingworth, Conn.) swam a 2:22.19 for fourth and Elizabeth Athanas (Manchester, Mass.) recorded a 2:22.19 for sixth place.
Emma Savoie (Milford, Conn.) took fifth in the 1,650 freestyle after registering a 18:04.77 and Megan Crawford (Agawam, Mass.) was credited with a 356.65 on the one-meter board.
In the last event of the championship, the 400 free relay team of Shen, Natalie Chamberlin (Ellington, Conn.), Roba, and Charlemagne sprinted to a second-place time of 3:28.68, which was also a NCAA "B" cut time.
