No. 3 Men's Volleyball Tops No. 14 Lasell In Three Sets

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 7, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team earned a straight-set sweep of Lasell on Tuesday night in Blake Arena by the scores 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

Springfield, ranked third in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, is now 8-1 as it avenged its only regular season loss from a season ago.  Lasell, who entered the game ranked 14th nationally, is now 4-3.

Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) directed a balanced Springfield offense to a .448 hitting percentage and added three of the Pride's 14 service aces. Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) was efficient on the right side with 13 kills on a .632 clip to go along with five digs and two aces and Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added 10 kills and three aces while hitting .529. Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) notched a match-best four blocks and Braden Gonzales (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was credited with a match-high 12 digs.

Springfield jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first after Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored in transition, and would push its lead to 13-6 when Ethan Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) ripped one of his three aces on the night.  The hosts took only 16 swings in the first set, with 10 being kills for a .562 hitting percentage, as Springfield did most of its damage from the end line. The Pride's seventh ace of the set came off the arm of Anderson for the 25-14 win.

Even at 4-4 in the second, Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) put a ball away in transition to cap off a six-point surge as Springfield was in control at 10-6. Springfield would call timeout after its lead was trimmed to 16-14, but Rouleau teammed with Ethan Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) for a block out of the break and Weislo followed with a transition kill to give the Pride a four-point edge again.  Walters would seal the 25-19 win as he chipped a kill off the block, capping off a frame in which Weislo accounted for seven of the Pride's 16 kills.

In the third, Lasell raced out to a 5-1 advantage and the Pride would burn both of its timeouts by the time it faced a 9-4 deficit.  The visitors maintained an 18-14 edge late, but Springfield would respond with a 5-1 push, getting an ace down the line from Mulvaney to knot the set up at 19-19.  A sideout kill from the Lasers would give them their final lead, but Springfield would put together a 4-0 burst, as a pair of Lasell attack errors sandwiched an Anderson kill and Weislo ace.  Lasell would later commit its ninth service error of the evening to conclude the 25-22 in.

This weekend, Springfield will once again serve as host for the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic, beginning on Friday night at 6 pm when the Pride take on MIT.
