No. 4 Men's Volleyball Clipped By No. 2 Vassar In Five Sets

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - March 31, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team was clipped by Vassar in five sets on Friday night in Blake Arena in a showdown of two of the top ranked squads in the country.   Vassar was victorious by the scores of 19-25, 25-16 25-22, 17-25, 15-8.

Vassar, who was ranked second in the nation in this week's AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, moved to 18-1 on the year, while the fourth-ranked Pride slipped to 21-3 as it had its 11-match winning streak snapped.

For the Pride, Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) stuffed his stat sheet with 14 kills, 11 digs, and nine aces, while Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) was credited with 43 helpers and five blocks.  Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) were strong in the middle and combined for 17 kills and eight blocks.

Andrew Kim produced a match-best 19 kills, Jacob Kim totaled 40 assists, and Gavin van Beveren turned in nine kills and six blocks for a Vassar team that ended the night hitting .325.

Mulvaney and Rouleau combined for a block out of Vassar timeout to push the Pride's lead to 13-9 in the first.  The visitors would pull within 20-19 as the Pride called for a timeout of their own, but Springfield would close out the set on a 5-0 push, with Anderson blistering an ace for the 25-19 win.   The hosts would hit .500 in the opener, led by four kills from Anderson.

In the second, Vassar jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back and it cruised to a 25-16 victory.  The Brewers hit at a .458 clip in the stanza, getting five kills from Kim, while Springfield was limited to a .000 hitting percentage.

An ace from Ethan Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) off the tape gave Springfield a 6-4 cushion in the third, but Vassar would respond with a 7-2 push to regain an 11-8 lead.  After going down by as many as four points, Springfield would battle to within 22-21 when DeCamp converted in transition, but Vassar called for a timeout and later pulled away for the 25-22 win.  Kim would account for five kills in the frame to pace the visitors.

Anderson cranked three aces to start the fourth as Springfield surged out to an 7-1 cushion following a stuff block from Rouleau.  The Pride would total six aces in the set, the last coming from Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) at 23-15, and would force a fifth set following Vassar's sixth attack error of the set for the 25-17 win.

Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) hammered a kill out of the back row in transition to give Springfield an early 3-2 advantage in the fifth, but Vassar would respond with a 4-1 push to force Springfield into a timeout.  Springfield would get as close as 9-7 on a kill by Anderson, but a 4-0 run from the visitors proved the be the difference en route to the 15-8 win.  Vassar had nine kills at a .562 clip in the fifth, with Adam Gulick and Kim each notching three kills.

Springfield will wrap up its three-match homestand against Nichols on Tuesday at 6 pm.
