State College, Pa. - April 14, 2023 - For the second-consecutive season, the Springfield College men's gymnastics program competed on the national stage in the NCAA National Collegiate Championships on Friday evening at Penn State University.
A year removed from becoming the first Division III program to ever compete in the NCAA National Collegiate Championships, it was another historic achievement for the Pride to return to the national stage as a team following their runner-up performance at the ECAC Championships. The Pride competed in the evening session against Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Cal-Berkeley and turned in an score of 381.324.
The evening was highlighted by Owen Carney (Sterling, Mass.) as the first-year qualified for the individual finals on both the horizontal bar and vault to become the first student-athlete in program history to reach the finals of the NCAA National Collegiate Championships in multiple events. In fact, Carney is the sixth Division III student-athlete in the last nine years to reach the finals.
Dominic Ramalho (Hollis, N.H.) scored a 76.432 in the all-around competition to finish seventh as an individual, while Sam Kaplan (Fairhaven, Mass.) made his debut on the national stage as totaled a 72.398 in the all-around.
Carney had a special performance on the vault and took eighth with a 14.466, while Ramalho registered a 14.133 and Andrae Butler (Tauton, Mass.) tallied a 13.966. On the horizontal bar, Carney was credited with a 13.233 to finish in 12th and the duo of Felix Kriedemann (Strasslach, Germany) and Jaden Laubstein (Oakland, Calif.) each scored 12.433's for top-25 finishes. Carney also had the Pride's best mark on the parallel bars with a 12.800, classmate Tyler Beekman (Bedford, N.H.) added a 12.666, and Carter Cochardo (Cicero, N.Y.) scored a 12.333.
On the floor, Ramalho paced the Pride with a 13.766 for a top-20 finish, while Carney posted a 13.266 and Timothy Templeton (Maynard, Mass.) added a 13.033. Colton O'Brien (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had the Pride's best showing on the pommel horse as he tied for 14th with a 13.200, Ramalho tallied a 12.033, and Kaplan notched a 11.566.
Dylan Colangelo (Youngstown, Ohio) registered a 13.133 on the rings, Kaplan totaled a 13.033, and Will Wilson (Montgomery, Ala.) was credited with a 12.866.
