New London, Conn. - April 15, 2023 - The Springfield College men's tennis team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon as they knocked off Coast Guard, 6-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The victory marked the first win for Springfield over Coast Guard since 2008 as the Pride is now 10-8, 4-2 and matched its most NEWMAC victories since the 2000 squad won four conference matches.
Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden) and Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) began doubles play with an 8-3 win at No. 3 and Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and Mike Kendrick (Watervliet, N.Y.) would later give Springfield a 2-1 edge heading into singles play with an 8-7 win at No. 2.
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) was first off the courts in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 before Villanueva Abad would later add the Pride's fourth point of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot. Thongbooncharoen clinched the match as he rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Mateusz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) wrapped up the afternoon with with 7-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.
