Springfield, Mass. - April 15, 2023 - The Springfield College women's tennis team powered past Wheaton, 8-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Courts.
Competing in their final home conference match of the regular season, Springfield boosted its record to 8-7, 4-3 in conference action.
The Pride swept all three doubles points, with Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) taking an 8-0 decision at No. 3, while Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) and Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) followed with an 8-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) and Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) then sent Springfield into singles play with a 3-0 lead following their 8-2 win at No. 1.
Heaney-Secord was first off the court at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win before Suozzo clinched the match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.) then tacked on a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6, Rosselli added a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5, and Mantaweewat concluded the afternoon with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top singles spot.
Springfield will play its final regular-season conference match of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Mount Holyoke for a 4:30 contest.
