South Hadley, Mass. - April 18, 2023 - The Springfield College women's tennis team closed out New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season play with a 5-4 win on the road at Mount Holyoke on Tuesday afternoon.
Now 9-7 on the year, Springfield improved to 5-3 win the conference win as it clinched a spot in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship. It marked the second-consecutive season that the Pride produced five conference wins, its most since the 2001 squad went 6-2.
Taylor Suozzo (Bedford, N.H.) and Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.) opened up the afternoon with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and Verginonica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Alysa Elliott (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) would later tack on an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 to give Springfield a 2-1 edge in singles play.
In singles, Suozzo made quick work of her opponent at No. 4 by a 6-2, 5-1 margin before Gabby Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) would account for the Pride's fourth point of the day following her 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2. The hosts Lyons would respond with a win at No. 1 singles, only to have Fulgieri clinch the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
Springfield closes out the regular season on Thursday when it hosts Trinity at 3 pm.
