Springfield, Mass. - April 5, 2023 - The Springfield College men's tennis team delivered another New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Wednesday with a gritty effort that led to a 6-3 win over Clark.
Springfield is now 8-7 on the year as the Pride has now posted its most conference wins since 2017.
The host Cougars were able to earn a pair of points in doubles play, as Springfield's lone point came at the No. 3 spot behind a dominant 8-1 victory by Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) and Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden).
Springfield evened the match up at 2-2 when Mateusz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) was first off the courts in singles action with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) put the Pride ahead for good after a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 before Villanueva Abad followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) would then clinch the match at No. 5 by a 6-3, 6-3 score. Clark would earn a three-set win at No. 1 for their lone singles point before Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) closed out the afternoon rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) win at No. 4.
Springfield will host Wheaton on Saturday at 12 pm.
