Springfield, Mass. - April 8, 2023 - The Springfield College men's tennis team battled their way to an 8-1 victory over Wheaton in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at Appleton Courts.
Springfield is now 9-7, 3-1 in conference, as the Pride matched its highest conference win total since the 2017 campaign.
The Pride started off the match sweeping doubles play, as Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and Tim Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) earend an 8-3 win at No. 1, while the No. 2 squad of Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) and Mike Kendrick (Watervliet, N.Y.) and the No. 3 unit of Eric Nicander (Stockholm, Sweden) and Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, México) each prevailed by 8-4 margins.
Springfield would go on to take five of the six singles matches, as Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) took a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 before Kendrick would clinch the match with his 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot.
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) would follow with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 6, Villanueva Abad added a 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 win at No. 2 and Mateusz Czajka (Linkoping, Sweden) wrapped up the afternoon with a 7-6(8-6), 0-6, 10-6, win at No. 3.
Springfield will next host Babson on Wednesday at 3:45 pm.
