Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - April 8, 2023 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team dropped its regular-season road finale to MIT on Saturday evening by the scores of 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 27-25.
The Pride dipped to 21-4 on the season as it entered the match ranked fourth in the country in this week's AVCA Division III National Poll. MIT moved to 15-13 with the win.
Jarrett Anderson (Largo, Fla.) totaled 19 kills, nine digs, four blocks, and two aces for the Pride, while Noah Weislo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added 17 kills at a .405 clip on the left side. Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) handed out 44 assists and collected 11 digs and Joel DeCamp (Simi Valley, Calif.) recorded a team-best five blocks.
After going down 10-6 in the opening set, Springfield would rally to take a 15-14 edge on an MIT attack error. However, the Engineers would score the next four points to gain some breathing room. The Pride would get within 23-22 on a block from Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.), but two miscues for Springfield would give MIT the 25-22 triumph.
The hosts would build a 19-14 lead in the second, only to have Springfield use a 4-0 surge, getting two-straight kills from Anderson, to make it a 19-18 contest. The Engineers responded with a 3-0 push of their own and would take a 25-22 win to go up two sets to none despite Anderson going for eight kills in the set.
A kill and ace from Noah Weislo gave Springfield an 8-6 edge in the third, but the stanza would go back and forth as it would feature 17 ties. With the score knotted at 20-20, Springfield called timeout and put together a 4-0 burst that was bookended by kills from Noah Weislo to go earn set point. MIT's sixth attack error of the set would complete Springfield's 25-20 win.
The two squads would be knotted up 18 times in the fourth, but it was Springfield that seemed like it was poised to force a fifth set as it lead 22-18 following a solo block by Rouleau. However, MIT would produce a 6-1 run to earn match point and eventually claim the upset victory following their fifth ace of the night.
Springfield concludes the regular season on Tuesday when it hosts nationally-ranked NYU at 7 pm.
