West Point, N.Y. – January 12, 2024 – The Springfield College men's gymnastics program opened the 2024 campaign on Friday evening at the West Point Open and finished fourth against some of the top competition in the country.
Penn State won the team title with a 401.300, which was ahead of Navy in second with a 394.500 and host Army in third with a 388.650. The Pride put together a score of 381.850, as Springfield tallied a mark of 380 or higher for the second consecutive season at the meet, and was followed by William and Mary (359.350) and Temple (354.950).
Sophomore
Sam Kaplan (Fairhaven, Mass.) guided the way for Springfield with a fourth place finish in the all-around competition as he tallied mark of 76.900. Kaplan (still rings and parallel bars) was one of six Springfield student-athletes to qualify for tonight's individual finals as he will be joined by first-year
Evan Reichert (Oswego, Ill.) on the floor exercise, first-year
Peyton Cramer (Grapevine, Texas) on the pommel horse, sophomore
Gustavin Suess (Portland, Ore.) on the still rings, senior
Dylan Colangelo (Youngstown, Ohio) on the vault and junior
Felix Kriedemann (Strasslach, Germany) on the high bar.
Individually, Kaplan finished seventh overall on the parallel bars with a score of 13.600 and ninth on the still rings with a score of 12.800. Cramer made his collegiate debut a memorable one as he finished first on the pommel horse with a score of 14.700 as he beat out three student-athletes from Navy for the top score.
Colangelo registered a sixth place finish on the vault with a score of 14.150, Suess took seventh on the still rings with a score of 13.000 and Kreidemann finished eighth on the high bar with a score of 12.800. Rechiert rounded out the highlights for Springfield as he finished ninth overall on the floor exercise with a score of 13.350.
Springfield produced its highest score of the meet on the vault as behind Colangelo was Reichert, graduate student
Dominic Ramalho (Hollis, N.H.) and sophomore
Tyler Beekman (Bedford, N.H.) with scores of 13.900 as well as sophomore
Will Wilson (Montgomery, Ala.) with a mark of 13.750.
Springfield will see its six student-athletes compete in the individual finals tonight on the campus of Army to conclude the 2024 West Point Open at 7:00 pm.
