Williamsport, Pa. - January 13, 2024 - The Springfield College wrestling team split its final two bouts of the Budd Whitehill Duals on Saturday at Lycoming to finish sixth in the event.
Springfield began the day with a 27-17 victory over Cortland State before being edged by Ohio Northern, 21-18, in the fifth-place match. Springfield, which was ranked 23rd nationally entered the weekend, is now 7-2 on the year. For his efforts on the weekend,
Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) was named to the the All-Tournament Team.
Versus Cortland,
Isiac Paulino (Athol, Mass.) earned a forfeit at 125 and
Ty Stewart (Dracut, Mass.) produced in a pin in 6:20 at 149 to give Springfield a 12-9 lead. After the Red Dragons answered with two major decisions,
Max Gryzmala (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.) started a run of four-straight victories by the Pride to close out the dual en route to the 27-17 win. Gryzmala went for a 14-6 major decision,
Nicholas Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) prevailed 8-5 in overtime at 184,
Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) notched a 19-3 technical fall at 197 and
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) closed out the bout with a 4-1 overtime win of his own at 285.
Against Ohio Northern, Springfield was able to win four of the 10 matches, with
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) coming up with a pin at 125 and
Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) posting a second-period fall at 141. Gryzmala came up with a 5-4 decision at 174 to give Springfield a 15-12 edge, and after the Polar Bears tied it up with a decision at 184, Allen earned a 10-3 decision at 197 to put the Pride on top. However, Ohio Northern came up with a at 285 to rally for the win.
Springfield will return to competition next Sunday in the NEWA Duals Championship in Rhode Island.
