Springfield, Mass. – January 27, 2024 – The Springfield College wrestling team picked up a 37-7 win over Wesleyan University in a dual meet held inside the Springfield Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield, which ranked No. 25 in the most recent The Open Mat Poll, improved to 10-4, while Wesleyan dropped to 4-3 on the year.
The Pride jumped out to a fast 12-0 after back-to-back pins at 125 and 133. First-year
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) pinned Chris Hong in 3:50 to open the dual at 125 before graduate student
Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) pinned Max Martinez in 2:57 at 133.
Wesleyan won at 141 and 149 as the score stood at 12-7 in favor of Springfield through four bouts. Graduate student
Jared Swartz (Ashland, Mass.) quickly got the Pride back on the board at 157 as he defeated Jacob Poore 21-6 for a technical fall to push Springfield's advantage up to ten at 17-7. Sophomore
Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.), first-year
Oliver Parker (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore
Nick Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.)all won by decision at 165 (5-3), 174 (8-2) and 184 (3-1) for nine more points towards Springfield's team score.
Sophomore
Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) registered a 22-6 win by technical fall at 197 and sophomore
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) rounded out the wins for Springfield at 285 as he pinned Kolton Gagnon in 4:43 en route to the 37-7 team victory for the Pride.
Springfield will compete at the John Reese Duals at Wilkes University as well as the Wildcat Open at Johnson & Wales University tomorrow morning.
