Springfield, Mass. – November 9, 2024 – The Springfield College wrestling team captured first place at the 2024 City of Springfield Championship on Saturday afternoon at Western New England University.
Springfield defeated American International College, 38-14, Springfield Technical Community College, 47-9, and Western New England, 26-20, to win its tenth straight and 16th overall City of Springfield Championship crown.
In the opener against AIC,
Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) and
Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.) kicked things off with back-to-back pins at 174-pounds and 184-pounds, respectively, for the 12-0 advantage.
Casey Allen (Park Ridge, N.J.) added three points to Springfield's score with a 3-0 decision at 197-pounds before
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) and
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded back-to-back pins of their own at 285 and 125, respectively to balloon the Pride's lead to 27-0.
Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) earned Springfield's fifth pin of the match at 141-pounds before a 7-0 decision at 149 pounds by
Luke Temple (Jackson, N.J.) ended the match at 38-14 in favor of Springfield.
Springfield then rolled to a 47-9 win over Springfield Technical Community College in the middle match. Callahan began the match with an 18-0 technical fall at 125-pounds before back-to-back pins by
Ariel Escalante (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Jaden Colwell (Lords Valley, Pa.) at 133 and 141 and a forfeit at 149 gave Springfield a 23-0 lead. STCC forfeited three of the next five matchups before Katz registered his second pin of the day at 285 en route to the 47-9 victory.
The Pride raced out to an 18-3 lead against the host Golden Bears thanks to pins by Deguire at 174, Leonard at 184 and Katz at 197. Callahan then defeated Clayton O'Connor at 125 by decision, 4-0, while
Esuar Ordonez (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) downed Antonio Intintoli, 17-2, by tech fall at 133 to balloon Springfield's score to 26-3. Western New England won the final four matchups of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Pride as Springfield won by a 26-20 final.
Springfield will host New England College in Blake Arena under the lights on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 pm.
